Doss, Desmond

Desmond Doss was a courageous medic during World War II who refused to carry a weapon. Despite being labeled a "conscientious objector," he single-handedly rescued the lives of 50 to 100 American Marines on Okinawa's Maeda Escarpment in 1945.

Pilecki, Witold

Captain Witold Pilecki of the Polish Army volunteered to enter Auschwitz in order to expose the camp's horrors to the rest of the world. Frightful First World War in Horrible Histories (exhibition)

From May 24, 2008, to January 4, 2009, the Imperial War Museum North hosted the exhibition Frightful First World War. It was based on the same-named Horrible Histories book, which is one of the series' most popular. It was made in collaboration with Terry Deary Scholastic. The show was free to the public.

Contents

To convey the tale of the First World War, the exhibition "places novelist Terry Deary's words and artist Martin Brown's graphics beside the Imperial War Museum's artefacts." "Explore the horrible conditions in the trenches through feely boxes, and smell to experience what critters and terrible stenches would have kept the men company," according to the Trench Action Station interactive.

Development

The exhibition was produced "to mark the 90th anniversary of the conclusion of the First World War" and was "specially tailored for younger visitors" by Ingenious Creative of Macclesfield, Cheshire. According to Terry Deary, "The First World War is an excellent subject for Horrible Histories since it is a dark comedy for young readers. The people's gallows humour was vital in their survival of the horrors. It's a lesson on how mankind handles the worst that the world has to offer. That is what education should be all about: preparing us for life, both the good and the bad "..

According to Culture24, "Museums often have a reputation for being intimidating, but this exhibition aims to show that this isn't always the case. Terry Deary understands how important comedy is in presenting tales and engaging an audience. 'People want to laugh,' he says. However, after the laughing fades, you may be left with something more profound. 'Knowledge or comprehension, or both.'"

Reception

"This is a fresh and unique landmark exhibition, combining the populism of the Horrible Histories books with the distinction of the IWM collection," Culture24 said. "It is especially important because this will be the last major anniversary when any veterans alive who were there at the time will still be alive." "You may look at them a hundred times and be lured in to a world of people who are long dead yet whose lives were caught forever in the click of a shutter," Terry Deary said of the images.

Energized, refreshed, and reloaded!

All the gruesome details regarding the dreadful First World War are waiting to be discovered, including:

Frightful First World War in Horrible Histories

(1 review with a 5 out of 5 average rating) Scholastic Inc. is the publisher. Want to learn how to sing trench songs, decipher communication codes, or learn about the role of animals in the First World War? If that's the case, this is the book for you. Terry Deary has written a book that describes life for both the Allies and the Central Powers in the trenches and at home throughout WWII.

There are fascinating information regarding how soldiers entertained themselves and how women's lives altered during the conflict. The material is delivered in bite-sized chunks with witty drawings and images. The book narrates the war's story chronologically, so it may be read from beginning to end, but it also lends itself to being skimmed through.

Brown, Martin

Martin Brown was born in the Australian city of Melbourne. He's been drawing for as long as he can remember. Martin's father used to bring home large sheets of paper, which he would scribble on and draw miniature figures on. Martin grew up, relocated to the UK, and found work doing what he always wanted to do: sketching doodles and small figures, thanks to food and water, the local state school, Melbourne High, and a touch of teachers college.
